Diamonds Are Mugabe's New Best Friend

How To Control Zimbabwe's Diamonds

On the 11th of August 2010 diamond traders flew from Russia, India, the US, Libanon and Israel in private jets to the Zimbabwean capital Harare to make an offer on the diamonds, of in total 900.000 karats and with a value of approximately 50 million euros, on the airport. These diamonds came from Chiadzwa, an area where the military of Mugabe has the control over the winning of diamonds and where numerous human rights violations are taking place.

These troubles in Chiadzwa arouse a lot of discussion in the Kimperley Process, that is about the certification of diamonds. People fear that Mugabe will use the profit from the diamonds for new violent campaigns. The Zimbabwean Shamiso Mtisi is appointed by the KP to make sure that Zimbabwe will keep their promises in the agreement. He is coming directly from the yearly assembly of the Kimberley Process and he will speak this evening about the situation in Zimbabwe.

Hans van Scharen, critical journalist, will preside the evening to lead the discussion in good order. Ex-WDO member Hugo Knoppert, currently working for Zimbabwe Watch, will also contribute.
